What silica in concrete is and why it is the most serious health risk in the concrete industry

Concrete is a mixture of cement, water, and aggregate — sand and crushed stone. The sand and much of the aggregate are composed primarily of quartz, which is crystalline silica. Silica makes up roughly 25-30 percent of concrete by weight — it is the most abundant component of the material after the cement paste. For most of concrete’s history, silica was understood as a structural component — the hard, durable mineral that gives concrete its compressive strength and abrasion resistance. It took decades of worker illness and epidemiological research for the construction industry and its regulators to fully understand that silica is also the most serious occupational health hazard in the concrete industry.
